Hickory High School, 2005

I had a dream

I was in Hickory High School,

2005, maybe.

I sat on the floor,

On the concrete floor of the Mall,

And I breathed in.

I thought about 2005

And the electric guitar.

The Allman Brothers.

The Meters.

The metal plugs that echo

When they touch the amplifiers.

And twelve-bar blues,

E minor pentatonic.

I don't play the electric guitar much anymore,

But man, I sat in meditation,

And I felt the shiny concrete,

And I remembered

That I, I play the electric guitar.

I move those strings

And send the fuzz

Out into the air.

I turn the volume knobs.

I slide and bend.

And if 2005 were moved

back to the year I was born,

It would now be 2006.

But for a glimpse,

Time was Tralfamadorian,

And all things and all

Places and all

Times were here at once.

All people were all ages

Including me, fifteen,

In Hickory High School,

On the floor of the Mall.

Not a memory.

A place and a time.
